The prevention division's goals are to prevent the loss of life, property, and environment by providing efficient and cost-effective fire prevention and life safety programs to the citizens of Hanford. Code enforcement and public education activities are used to fulfill these goals.
Code Enforcement
Through the city's inspection and permit systems the California Fire Code, CCR Title 19, the Hanford Municipal Code, and NFPA standards are enforced by the Hanford Fire Department by adoption. Typical areas of code enforcement are:

- New Construction
- Fireworks sales and use
- Occupancy changes
- Special use permits
- Business fire safety inspections

Public Education
The Hanford Fire Department offers various safety education programs for the citizens of Hanford. The Hanford Fire Department believes that through these educational programs a true "Fire safe community" can be achieved.
All programs except CPR are available to individuals and industries free of charge. CPR requires a nominal fee. Programs include but are not limited to:
